Whether one is preparing for surviving economic upheaval/invasion, natural disaster, the next 5k race(insert smile here) performance is the name of the game.
When I first started researching things concerning survival I checked out Youtube. I must say I was very concerned for some of those I saw on there as far as what I perceived in their ability to physically withstand physical duress (not that their info was bad, they just looked like they would struggle in a real life emergency situation). I am a 15 year veteran of the fitness industry and I have always stressed functionality in those I have trained, and in my personal regiments.
This what I have found to work for me and those I have trained:
I mix different modes of exercise together with the goal in mind of general physical preparedness(gpp). For example, 4 rounds for time of 1/2 mi run and 50 pushups. You can combine lifting (odd objects are best, my sons and I train with sandbags but rocks work in a pinch. My profile picture has me flipping a tractor tire) with 1/4mi or 1/2mi runs or bodyweight exercises such as pullups, pushups, situps etc. Most of the demands on will not be pure but mixed (I still get a good rucksack run in on a fairly regular basis). The key is not to get in a rut or specialize as what we neglect can be our undoing. Have fun and be creative. Get a partner or keep a log, something to keep youself accountable.
Over the next couple of weeks, I will go into this topic in more detail. I will feature some articles on how to get equipment on a budget, useful vs useless exercises, program design and more.
Stay tuned...
